Brazing is a joining technique where a molten filler metal joins two or more metals; the filler metal has a melting point lower than that of the joined metals. A diffusion bond is created between the metals and the braze alloy.
Vacuum brazing takes place in a furnace, in the absence of air, and is convenient for mass production. It is used in many different industries, including tool manufacture, automotive, aerospace and medical. Vacuum brazing is a clean process allowing flux-free braze joints with high integrity.
For high-quality brazed joints, it is necessary to prepare the parts by chemical or mechanical (abrasive) cleaning to ensure key surfaces are free of oxides. Surface roughness is controlled to ensure the desired capillary action of the filler metal.
Time and temperature also play a key role in the quality of brazed joints. The filler metal’s alloying and wetting action increases with an increase in temperature, however, often the braze temperature is kept as low as possible to reduce heat effects on the parts or in the case of some superhard tooling, diamond graphitisation.

The VBM-150 has been designed for the brazing of superhard tooling such as PCD, PCBN and single crystal diamond.

The vacuum chamber has a diameter of 150mm and a length of 500mm allowing 200 to 300 inserts to be brazed per cycle.

The average brazing cycle time is 30 minutes (actual time depends upon the tool size).
